Research work in partnership with the IUSTI laboratory

FluidAlp is involved in several research projects with the IUSTI laboratory.

The most significant collaboration is Alexandre Narcisse's PhD work on controlling smoke movement in confined spaces using fixed screens coupled with longitudinal ventilation. The academic framework is a tunnel in which the longitudinal air velocity is controlled.

This work characterises the flows around a screen, establishes a baseline of smoke behaviour in this configuration (without a screen) and investigates the screen / fire / ventilation coupling. Results suggest that installing fixed screens in a tunnel may allow reductions in required ventilation capacity, assuming rational and regulated use.

This work will be extended by a second CIFRE PhD (FluidAlp – IUSTI) to complete the previous studies and generalise the results to geometrically more complex configurations. This second PhD is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

Measurements

Beyond feeding our studies, on-site measurements are an opportunity to deepen our understanding of flows in the structures we test — highlighting phenomena simulated numerically and clarifying where and why they diverge from reality.
